GILLETTE, WYOMING

Located in Northeast Wyoming on the rolling plains of the Powder River Basin, Campbell County has a rich agricultural and Western history.  Archeological studies of the area reveal that roaming bands of Indians hunting buffalo here 10,000 years ago.  In more recent history, early 19th century Eastern settlers migrated to the Gillette area for beaver trapping to satisfy a demand for fashionable men's hats in Europe.

By the late 19th century Gillette was a ranching community - and with the coming of the railroad in 1891 - it became a hub for transporting livestock to market.  In July the same year the homestead rights of for railroad employees were bought by the Lincoln Land and Livestock Company in order to form the new town which was named after Edward Gillette, a popular railroad surveyor.  Campbell County was named after Robert Campbell who helped build Fort Laramie and John A. Campbell, who became Wyoming's first territorial governor.

Today, Gillette is the largest city in Campbell County with a population of approximately 20,000.  It is also the county seat.  Due to its rich resources in oil, natural gas and coal, Gillette is known as the "Energy Capitol of the Nation," and produces more than 30 percent of the nation's coal.  The Powder River Basin has the largest reserve of compliant coal in the United States which is used almost exclusively with domestic utilities.  Gillette currently has 16 coal mines in operation.

A favorable climate for both business and family, Gillette is bustling with indoor and outdoor events year-round for residents to enjoy.  From rodeo to bike riding along an extensive trail system, to enjoying a symphonic performance - there are a variety of activities for all ages.  Excellent schools, a healthy and diverse economy, and a close-knit safe community make Gillette an excellent place to live and work.
